Ergonomics is a scientific word for a simple idea -making the tools we use fit with our bodies and motions in a harmonious way. Ergonomics can apply to almost anything we frequently use, from a chair to a bed to a computer keyboard.
The fact is, most of the time we don’t pay enough attention to the the way everyday things like furniture affect our comfort and even health. This is especially true at work, where many of us sit in front of computers for much of the day.
The shape of the chair you sit in, your posture and the way you move during the day has a cumulative influence on the way you feel. Very often we aren’t aware of this because it’s subtle. We may not notice any discomfort until we end up with back problems or carpal tunnel syndrome.
The first step in working with ergonomics is to become more aware of how you are interacting with your environment. A good place to start is your office or computer chair, which you may spend many hours with most days.
How does your chair fit with your body? Do you notice how you feel when you sit down and get up? Is your chair adjustable to suit different tasks you may have to perform during the day?
If your chair and other items around you are not a good match for you, it may be time for a change! You can, of course, simply go to a furniture store and sample alternative chairs. Or you can browse through a store that specializes in creating ergonomic chairs and other furniture, such as the Ultimate Back Store.
Don’t underestimate the importance of the everyday items that your body interacts with on a daily basis!
